I know that im doing the same thing. But i was just wondering if that would be more effective way to run with a SAI thats all. oh and welcome this site will offers lots of knowledge and experience with mods and tech stuff im just a newbie myself.

Air + gas = compression/power. The more colder air, the better.

Think of it as a vacuum. Driving in the rain, water flies everywhere. By removing that airbox, It is a possibility for water to get into there.

this is a good way to make alittle noise, but alot of what an intake does is straighten out the air flow before it reaches the engine, that set up is the same as stock with a bit more luke warm air and no straight flow.

but hey if u like it u like it.

first of all lancergts, autobot thought that... he says that he felt a loss in power,, i said that i dodnt, and actually for me i think it is the same...

brian... like ive mentioned before, the "ideal" aftermarket intake would route the intake to a colder area of the engine bay and ease the route of the air to the engine.... nor this "free" mod, or the rrm intake are successful on this.. actually the rrm intake is A LOT closer to the header, so it makes sense if i say that with that intake it sucks 50% more hot air, than removing the silencer....

either way, my personal opinion is that, either if them will give you a power gain that its worthy... specially when ive heard that the rrm, intake is over the 100$.... i am not, by any means, bashing the rrm products, i really like them and im give my respects for their researches and everything... it just doesnt make sense to "ease" on the route of the air to the engine, grabbing the air from the hottest area of the engine bay.....

No kidding, why choose a 3 year old thread to show off?

Really wasn't showing off but was rather showing how my intake uses the stock piece. I really doubt my car is worthy of showing off at this point compared to most of the cars on here.

Actually, thanks for reviving this. I wasn't here in 2007 and i find it interesting to know. I might try it just to see how it sounds.

It sounds really loud. Well for the 7th gen lancers. But as it stated above it actually decreases performance.

I will state that if you do have the stock airbox, removing the the snorkel (that is what it is called), Is a really bad idea...

There is a reason it was engineered that way. And it will indeed have bad effect, cause all that is getting in there is hot air.

On the other hand, the stock snorkel with its resonator (the part on the right hand side) is air flow restrictive, and it's there to reduce noise.

The best option that is economical without spending the money for an actual SRI or CAI is to go with a K&N or WORKS highflow air filter, and get the Ralliart snorkel, which has has no resonator and higher airflow. And then opening up the grill area of the radiator shield.

It has been tested and proven that this can produce almost the same amount of power as a SRI.

I myself have done this, and this is what it looks like.

FYI, if you do get a SRI that has the airbox.... (K&N/Takeda) this is also a better setup for it.
Also Takeda is doing an Airbox revision with their SRI, so that it is even more enclosed so that it has a cutout for the strut bar and seals to the hood.

this is what i have had for over a year now. it's made for a Toyota Corolla. made it work! :) no problems.

i recently replaced the filter and flipped it up! it's louder and i feel more response. keep in mind i am broke if i had the money i would spend for an actual SRI but this has worked so far why change it! :-D
