I agree, people should not jump to conclusions and blame the aircrew right away. Nobody knows the details and it's unfair to assign blame before we do. However, there have been cases where, after intense investigation, the aircrew have been at least partially to blame. If this is the case, they should be held accountable. The military's job is to defend the nation, but that doesn't mean we never do anything wrong. So I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens. In the end, the only thing lost was property, which is far better than lives. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
When you get the "dead stick", do you still have steering capabilities? You explained it as losing power steering, and the few times my car has died, it's still controllable. Just curious about it. I'm not saying the pilots were at fault, I think they did the best thing they could considering the situation. Especially dumping all their fuel.
well, when ever i lost power steering my steering was minimul but very hard to move. so i went off of that. but no, its very difficult to control a "dead stick" in the C-130T Hercules that i work on, they have the metal bars above the feet so that when there is a "dead stick" they have leverage to put their feet to pull on the controls. i have tried to move the controls when there is no power on the aircraft and i have to tell ya, its not easy at all. i can barely move them a couple inches, so imagine doing that when you have drag on the aircraft. i did read a story about some marine pilot who ditched and killed 4 family members of one family and destroyed 2 homes and something about he could have landed or aborted at some navy station but didnt. i cant remember where i saw that article, but yes i do agree that at times it is the aircrew to blame. and i do agree that no one should jump to ANY conclusion when an investigation has not be completed. i do like how the pilots apologized to the people and how the people went to help the pilots.
no, if you get a "dead stick" in jet powered aircraft there is 0 control. the only thing they could do to lessen collateral damage is to dump the fuel tanks, which is what they did. However, we will all have to wait for the investigation to be completed to find out what happened, until then, I will not approve of nor speculate of any assumptions. ->Side note, I hope I get a good deal on the stuff I just bid on.
For those of you who aren't redditors, here's an AMA with two of the people whose home was destroyed by that F-18 the other day. It's pretty interesting. http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/rznbz/my_house_got_destroyed_by_the_f18_yesterday_ama/
Lol. So, I got our offer put in for that house today. Hopefully everything goes well. Haven't heard back from the realtor yet, so I guess it's going according to plan.
