nope its not the same. the transmission in the Evo X has gears where as the CVT does not. its a whole different tranny.

The two trannys are completely different. Here is some info on each:

    1) The CVT found in current 08 Lancer Models is a continuously variable transmission (hence its acronym). This type of transmission constantly adjusts via the ECU computer to give you a continuous, no shift shock, acceleration when you push the accelerator. The steering wheel shifters/floor shifter simulate changing gears by allowing the driver to make the continuous transmission change where the power band is and, subsequently, help the engine to readjust power to give a more sporty feel.

    2) The new SST transmission that will be in the Evo X is similar to the DSG found in VW vehicles. It uses a dual clutch setup to allow the standard automatic option with specifically factory set gearing options. Futhermore, the manual mode allows for the driver to switch between gears with out the need of driver clutch input, hence the beauty of the dual clutch design.

What you will find is that the CVT is aimed, in its automatic mode to provide a continuous and broad power band curve through the RPMs which is the most fuel efficient design currently available for a transmission. You will see this coming out in a lot of the new compact sedans such as the new Nissan Sentra for example. In order to get more sport and performance with these transmissions, you have to put it in the manual mode and work the fake "gears" yourself. The SST Evo X transmission will be preset for sports driving with its gears preset to make the most of the engine's estimated 300 or so HP. The SST gives you the additional benefit to throw it into manual mode to further push the gears that are already sport tuned to the drivers benefit and fun.

Hopefully this helps to answer your question a bit.

Yes, the new Lancer Evo X will come with the option for the first time in any Evo between a 6 speed stick and a SST clutchless transmission with paddle shifting (auto on steriods).
