Hey guys, Im thinking of buying a Cold Air Intake but I read somwhere that you need a "bypass" to prevent "hydrolock". I dont know what these two terms are referring to and didnt find anything on them. Wondering if anyone knows about those, or installing a CAI, or a site that I could read up on them myself. Thanks
The "bypass" is probably referring to something along the lines of a hydroshield. It covers the filter, and prevents it from sucking up TOO much water, from what I understand. "Hydrolock" is when your car's intake sucks in water, and it gets into your intake manifold instead of air, thus royally boning you and your car's engine up the ass. Lol. One good way to put it. First question is, do you have a manual transmission? From what I've read, only manual trannys can get cold air intakes(CAIs).
idk what a bypass is but hydrolock is what HUNK said. a member on PL blew his engine cuz of sucking up water. and manuals aren't the only ones that can have a CAI.
Really? I mean, I guess you could make your own and route it over behind the fog light or something, but whenever I went to buy my intake, it said manual trans only for CAI's.
You would have to be driving through a flood pretty much to get hydrolock. Think about it. The filter is sitting low behind the foglight. Unless theres a hurricane blowing rain constantly inside your foglight, if you have a hydro shield, you'll be just fine. I drove MANY times in rainstorms with it and a hydro shield. no problems whatsoever. And injen makes theyre CAI for manual and auto. Just have to relocate the oil cooler with the auto.
Just check if you an auto. It is because of the way the trans sit in relation to the routing of most of the piping. As far as hydrolock, it only takes about a tbsp of water in there to screw you over.
Yeah my Lancers 5spd Manual. So a hydro shield should cover mine and my rides ass from water gettin in the filter. Ill look them up and find out where they go how they prevent hydrolock ect. I didnt know that the CAI goes all the way down to the fog light area. I have an 03 OZ so no foglights mayb its different?
i recommend the "k&n typhoon short ram intake" cold air intakes will always suck in water bypass or not. the bypass on a cold air intake only reduces the amount of water u suck in. with the typhoon intake your getting a heat shield and still getting cold air from the out side using the factory o.e.m tubing. google it up and look into it.
Thanks a lot guys i appreciate all teh feed back I read that a bypass reduces the amount of air you suck in significantly so mayb I will go wtih a short ram intake. Ill have to look into it more, but thanks for all the info.
I should have a couple CAI's tomorrow at a good price if all works out. Nothing set in stone yet, But i should be able to get them to any of you guys that want a CAI for between 50-75 bucks. Keep an eye out for a FS post about them.
Ill def take one for that price lol. Are CAI's easy to install? Im mechanically skilled just havn't put one on before, so I dont kno wwhat to do as far as gaskets and things like that go. Anyone put one on before that could PM me a quick step by step (wouldnt have to be extensive just highlights of things I should keep in mind).
Its much easier than what you are describing. The most you will have to do is cut something and lift your car up on front driver side. Maybe remove or turn your tire. Its the easiest bolt on for anyone. just removing your stock intake and putting this one one making sure your battery is disconnected.
^^yeah, CAI's are fairly simple to install. remove factory airbox, make sure the new setup has a clear path, install the piping....and then filter and MAF sensor.
