How easy would this be to install, and what exactly is it going to replace and do? Also, would I feel a significant power gain? Thanks for the input everyone. I'm just trying to learn as I go along what exactly things do on a car. I am looking at getting this, but I wanted to see what ya'll thought about it, and if it's worth it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OBX-Cam- ... 571wt_1044
Link does not work for me, but i am guessing it is an adjustable cam gear, its basic use it to advance or retard the cam profile (valve timing). I would not suggest installing it yourself, until you can do some more research.
Ok, well it is an OBX Racing cam gear for $75 shipped. If I did get someone to install it, how much do you think it would cost? Do you think there would be a noticeable gain? These are some things it says on the webpage: Advance 5 point locking design with stainless steel bolt Lightweight T6061 T6 aluminum aircraft grade with precision and CNC computer machined Adjustable +/- 10 degrees (advance/retard) Hard baked anodized gears Laser cut setting for easy adjustment 5~20 Horsepower gain Lifetime warranty from manufacturer defects
Honestly i could not give you a good estimate on the cost of installation, as that will depend on the shops labor fees, the time it takes (experience of mechanic) and the difficulty of changing it. Its not as easy as removing the valve cover and swapping them out, you have to mark the gears so they line up perfectly from when they were removed (also using timing marks on the gear itself) to the new ones that were installed. The installation could easily cost more than the gear itself. Depending on how far you adjust the gear will determine the performance gain, i would not expect too much as most people use them on heavily modified engines. If it is adjusted too much you may loose valve clearance and the piston might smack the valve, could damage or destroy your engine. I myself in no way feel qualified to adjust the valve timing on an engine so i would leave that up to a qualified mechanic. If it was my money to spend i would probably save it for something else, as if your internals are stock, there probably is not a need to adjust it.
