I read in an article in car and driver that the '09 Lancer GTS was going to use the Dodge Caliber's 172 hp 2.4 liter engine as opposed to its current 152 2.0. Only problem is its the ONLY article I've seen that says this. Anyone know if this is true or not??

    here's the article:

You guys had better hope that ain't true... if it ain't a HEMI it is a POS. This coming from a Magnum owner who loves his car...

I rented the magnum and was very disappointed. It had very small balls for being a HEMI

If you rented a Magnum you probably got the 2.7L motor. You won't likely find the Magnum R/T or SRT8 at a car rental agency.

I highly doubt that the 2.4 liter will be a standard engine, most likely it will be an option on a GTS model or even a new model. I think most of the aftermarket will be based on the 4b11 engine because thats the engine for the EVO, but who knows for sure.

I hope they dont put a domestic engine in the lancer, it defeats the purpose of having one in the first place, cause the new evo s engine is based on the lancers engine.

I know dodge and mitsu did a collabo with the "420a" engine...it was in the neon and the eclipse but had different heads (i believe). As well as the 2.4 L in the pt cruiser and the convertable eclipse. Although I am not 100% on that. SO, stating that, I believe they will do it again. :(

If you were refering to the 2nd gen. eclipse spyder with the 2.4L that engine is all Mitsu. the 4G64(also 3g RS and GS), very simular to the 4G63, with only a few differences. I believe the 2.4L turbo engine that is in the PT. Cruiser is the same engine thats in the SRT4(not sure) but those are not the same 2.4L in the Eclipses

Sorry buddy, but it all depends on where you are. I worked for Enterprise Rent a Car for two years and we carried very nice vehicles. We had SRT8 Magnums, we had Cadillac CTS's with the big engines. We had the new Mustangs with the big engines...Hummers...Lexus IS300s.....Infiniti M45s and G35s (2 door coupes) and many other things. And I didnt work at one in Beverly Hills, I worked at one in the middle of an auto mall in Cerritos CA.

Oh, and a rule with rental cars: ALWAYS book a reservation, never just walk into a rental place, you will get REAMED. My best rental ever was a Ford Fusion for $400 a week  With a reservation you would be paying like...$200 a week at most during high times.

I would take the 2.0 MIVEC over the 2.4L any day! Besides, the 4B11 is the basis for the EVO's turbo, there will be more mods and it will respond way better to mods than any Dodge piece of ****. Thats just my 2c.

    Howdy,

I have a representative that I am currently corresponding with at Mitsubishi North America. I would be happy to relay some of the info that he has told me about since I sent him a letter about a month ago. Some of this info may be a repeat for some and new to others. Hopefully more new than old :p .

    1) Mitsubishi will be unveiling its final working production version of the new Evo X at the Tokyo Auto show with JDM sales beginning 2 weeks thereafter (this will be around Sept. to Oct.). The cool thing about this is it means we will at least be getting some real world test numbers fairly soon.

    2) Mitsubishi is currently working on a possible Hatchback version of the Evo. If this model does go to production, expect it to be released around 2010. The only bunker buster here is that Mitsubishi has already pretty much decided that should they make a hatch form of the Evo, more than likely it will only sell in Europe and Asia as the hatch market in the U.S. is not as favorable.

    3) Although the current model line uses the 4b11 2.0L I4 engine, there is plans to put out another trim level with a 2.4L I4 averaging between 170 and 190 HP depending on displacement. Whether this will be the jointly developed engine or a more Mitsubishi Heavy restructured variant is not being conveyed as of this time. Futhermore, another trim level in development is what is known in the U.S. as the Ralliart edition has plans to use the 4b11 with a less detuned turbo as well as a possible lighter version of the AWD system.

The big key to these two trims, since they have not been officially announced or confirmed by Mitsubishi, according to the person I am speaking with at Mitsubishi North America, is that these new models are heavily dependent on new 08' Lancer sells. It is not new news that Mitsubishi has been having a bit of trouble as of the last few years financially in the U.S. because of slow sells. Mitsubishi apparently is going to determine how much they develop each of their vehicle lines by how well the public responds to it and therefore buys it. I mean, it wouldn't be any problem to take a GTS, swap the powertrain out and then resell it so long as the overall engine dimensions are within reasonably similar dimensions.

Hopefully with the recent reported earnings Mitsubishi posted for its last quarter showing Lancer sells up some 228% in May compared to sells of the 06' lancer, the Lancer leading the May 15.5% sales increase, the Lancer up some 195% for June, and Mitsu sales up 30% for June compared to previous year sales, we won't have to worry about them hesitating to produce these middle trim levels of the Lancer to compete with the butt ugly subaru wrx.

If anyone else has heard different, let me know. I am dying to get specs on anything that may ship in between the base trim levels and the Evo and arrive for sale in the Spring.

    Bill
