Tranny Swap

For those of you who are looking to swap the X motor into your boring DE or even 08 GTS (like me) ask yourself this...will the transmission handle the power? I've been stuck with the CVT which sucks real bad but I couldn't complain since it was the last Lancer on the lot and it was in my price range. And lets face it. I can't drive stick. I'm sorry, don't flame me, but I've never had a good vehicle to learn on. I've tried on my old car and I failed miserably. Whatever, get over it.

I know the 4B11 and 4B11T have not only different designs, but also different transmissions. CVT vs TC-SST. Anyone did this swap before? Namely the transmission. Does anyone have pictures of the two transmissions? Are they similar in design? I just worry about the stupid thing bolting up. Especially if I drop the MR motor into the car, I'd like to put the TC tranny in as well. Call me lame, but hey it's less headache for me and my fiance who occasionally drives the car and hates stick. I'm just lazy and would prefer to have an auto and also considering that there little/no turbo lag on a boosted automatic, it's something to consider. You don't lose power between shifts. Either way if anyone has done it please post, if not, maybe you can help me figure this out?

my advice would be rather then doing all that work pick up a wrecked evo or something and just rebuild it

Would love to, unfortunately, finding a wrecked Evo is easier said than done. It's bad enough I can't find an R/A in the yard, it's even harder to find any 08 Lancers anywhere that have the motors for grabs.

The SST tranny would be great to have, I am still to confirm if the CVT and SST tranny have the same spots to bolt up to the chasis. Additionally, I doubt the 4B11 and 4B11T would have different motor mount locations, which is why I think the swap will be fairly straight forward. My only issue is that the AWD mode will not used which might cause some problems with the TCM. I might be able to bypass that or simply ignore it altogether depending on HOW it will affect the ECU outputs. My only alternative is to either a. get the suspension and use the electronic LSD or simply use the manual LSD from the Evo IX. Either way I'd be required to go AWD which is not exactly what I had anticipated on.

As previously stated, a lot of this work is strictly theory right now due to budgeting, however by getting my information in line just now I can safely start piecing things together. This thread might hopefully be helpful to anyone else who is looking to do something similar.

Edit: I was considering doing a turbo on this car and using the CVT transmission as my base HOWEVER my performance plateaued yesterday when I overheated the CVT while driving and causing it to go into limp mode. This lets you go as high as 3,000 rpms @ WOT and no more. It protects the transmission from any further damage. The fix: let it cool off for a few hours and it will be fine. Next phase-> install transmission cooler and find someone who would be able to build up the CVT tranny for more power. Seeing as to how it is a clutchless M/T, it would technically be possible to make it work, however it's a coin toss between that and the SST swap.
