reCAPTCHA was the cause of the spam

    So guys looks like the human verification algorithm that many sites use was cracked again late last year (hence all the spam).

    Pretty good read, so what're we gonna do about the spammers? Keep banning and deleting their posts? I'm fine with doing that until it blows over.

    Yes keep banning them and once a month I'm going to delete those members.

    I've also changed our human verification to question and answer based so I'm hoping that helps.
