I noticed on several cars that they don't carry licence plates on the front, does a car HAVE to have one in the back and one behind? just asking since i don't really know. or does it depend on the state/place?

Well here in california its the law to have one in the front and in the back....I learn that the hard way by getting a fix up ticket....but you can go to the dmv near you and ask or go to the website....

It varies by state actually...here in Pennsylvania we only need a plate in the rear of the car. Anything on the front could be a vanity plate or anything custom, if you have a holder.

what do you mean by "holder" ?

I just mean if you have a place to put the plate...most of the time there's either an indentation or bulge on the front bumper where a plate could go...other times, like in the case of my old EVO, they provide a holder which you can attach to screw a plate into.

Yeah, it depends state to state. Here in CO you're required to have the front and back but I don't have one on the front. Local cops don't seem to care but the State Troopers do. They pulled me over in my Corvette for not having it in the front. Didn't really care though. Some cars just don't look good with a front license plate so I said screw 'em.

that what i told the cop that stop me...he asked me why i dont have it in the front....and i told him stright out that it didnt look good in the center....that why i bought the side mount

Yeah the cop told me "you need a license plate in front just like every other Corvette owner"...and i'm thinking yeah right. She, yes she, wrote me a "courtesy warning." And no more than a minute after I pulled out of the parking lot I see another vette go by...no front license plate. What a joke. I just don't understand why it's required in the front and it's even more aggravating when the law isn't even in every state. Stupid.

In Ga and MOST southern states they only make you have the main plate in the rear of the car but I know MOST northern states make you have one in the front and the rear.

If you end up getting a new front bumper, you can ask them not to drill a place for the license plate. You may be able to get around it that way. It is "law" here in CT, but I know a lot of people who fill the holes of get new bumpers and they are not forced to get a front plate.
