So, the temperatures have been dropping here recently to low 30's at night, usually everytime now when i back out my drive way after warming the car up, i hear clicking noise coming from the joints, of power steering. Now the problem goes away always after the car drives 2 miles and i turn couple times. this only happens when i back out the drive way and i turn my wheels for the first time that day. Question targeting guys who live up north: Have you have this happen to your lancer? Question towards everyone one else: what about you? guys in warmer climates? I am taking it to mitsubishi today for them to check it out, i will let you know of the outcome, may be something needs to be greased up?
yea man i had the same problem too a while back, its just when the first thing in the morning you back up right and turn.....its happened to me about a month and a half ago.i took mine to the dealer but they couldnt find anything wrong nor make the sound.in the steering column?thats where i could feel it.the dealer asked me to keep it at the dealer overnight but i was 2 hours away from home and i was bymyself so,this might be a recall if there are enough complaints about it cause i know its happened to me and it makes that popping/clicking noise everynow and then.
no problem man hopefully there something that can be done to get it to be a recall in the steering column.or in that area.my car is stock too if you wanted to know.
Hey man, Cold New Englander here.... I notice that first thing in the morning, or when leaving work after the car has sat for ruffly 9-10 hours, I hear a click noise when backing out and turning the wheel to the left. Its not a series of clicks... just a single click, and not very loud... just noticable... then it doesn't do it again untill the car has sat in the cold for a period of time. Is the noise you hear a single click, or a series of clicks? I dont really know what it could be.. also,I dont know if it has to do with turning the wheel to the left or not, it just happens that thats the way I have to turn to get out of the driveways at home and work. It might just be the metal in the suspention clicking or creaking from being so cold... Or, I have a CVT, I think I read you do aswell?... it may be something to do with the CVT transmission....I dont know. I almost think it might be a delayed release of the e-brake. I noticed one cold morning after spending the night at a relitive's house, I had trouble backing out and realized the e-brake was stuck, then it let go after a few feet. It is prob not the thing making the click noise, but I use my e-brake every time I park, so that is something that MAY be the root cause... again I dont know. Not much help, but your not alone in this.
Fairly simple to explain. Several parts including the suspension and steering column use rubber grommets to dappen noise and absorb shock and vibration. When it is warm, the rubber that makes these dampening grommets is flexible. In colder weather, however, depending on the percentage of hard rubber used to make the grommet, will cause the rubber grommets to shrink and become hard. With less flex, ability to absorb movement, and size, the hard rubber and possibly some metal can and will rub creating ticking sounds. Then, as the engine compartment warms up, the heat helps to let the rubber grommets to expand and become flexible again, so the clicking sound goes away. This also explains why the dealers may or may not find it and because they usually test drive the vehicle when it is warmed up. There's nothing they can do about it anyway. It is a natural thing that happens that depends on the amount of true hard rubber used in the grommets of the vehicle. Bill
so can that mean if its been sitting for awhile and wheni turn the wheel when i back up i can FEEL the pop in my steering wheel?thats how i really noticed it.
Yes, think about it. In cold weather, especially freezing temperatures that are common to the north, things naturally harden. Lubricants freeze, spacers shrink and become less flexible. I would be concerned if it did it in warmer weather, but if it just started with the cold, then I would just keep an eye on it and go from there.
came back from the dealer and they did not find anything worng, everything looked good. They even helped me adjust my Carbon fiber hood for me. and they were amazed at the intake and exhaust.. One mechanic told me when he will get home he will buy the injen intake also for his 98 lancer hahahah.. well i think its a cold weather thing, unless i actually leave the car there over night for them to actually hear the clicking..
i do experience this too. every morning(or when the car sits for a long period of time). its not new to me. i had an 06 civic that does the same. well, the dealer told me that it was the "brake shifting". according to them it is normal, when the car sits for a while & the components(brake) cool down(just like what wasper explained). so when i noticed it in my lancer, it dint surprise me. it would be better though if it would just stop doing that. lol.
