The plastic piece is also used to direct more air into the radiator, i would not take it completely off, i'm not saying is a performance gain, but the extra air going through the radiator helps the engine run cooler. When you put the filter in it probably should not wobble, i would check and make sure the tabs for the intake are matching with the holes under the actual filter element. It can be a bitch if you dont have them perfect. lol

    Hi ATM,
I did the cut out about 5 mo ago, check out my link and pics here as well as an explanation of how how/where the air is filtered into the engine --

There is a company in Malaysia that makes a plastic cover that fits on the end of the intake tube and covers the slits/cut out so all the air coming in thru grill goes straight into the intake pipe.

    Here is the link--

^^^^^^^^^^^ that's great to know that someone has already tried this. did you notice anything different after you did make the cut?

have you noticed the weatherstripping on the hood? it sits right over the intake like it's a channeling device.

Ok, here is my attempt at this, did notice a much more smooth throttle response and a much more smoother acceleration out of he car, but I also covered the little holes on the bottom of the first section that contains the baffle. < which by the way, I an trying to find a way to remove all together. Also, but mine a little bigger to make it look like it was supped to be like that.

How is that? They're positioned right infron of the intake. If they were to have air escape, the intake would suck it in before it got out of the hood. Plus the only functional vent on the hood is the drivers side. So that makes no sense

Well other than, pulling air backwards from over the car and into something that is recessed in the hood creating a pocket of low pressure over the area making it impossible to take air back into it at speed, other than that, I don't know. Other than the fact that the radiator shroud being just like our and having a section to direct air from the front of the car into the snorkel, I don't know. And their about 6 inches back from the intake snorkel, I don't know.

You tell me. I don't even know where to go with this, since you don't know that the hood looks like, nor physics, nor what does and doesn't work on the car.
    Sorry for confusing you.

your mod looks nice. what did you use to cut the plastic out? it looks pretty clean.

Just a razor blade. The area is pretty flexible so I deep scored both sides of the plastic and then flexed it enough to snap it, then cleaned it up with the razor blade.

^^^^^^^^ i'll have to try that next time. i was also thinking about buying some weatherstriping to put on the edges.

i've noticed a change in the way the car feels. it really feels lighter, like it accerlates faster. now i just need to lower the car and i'm done with modding it.

sweet. Didn't notice any power type gains. Course why would you, didn't really change anything. Noticed the car has a much smoother acceleration like its getting the air it needs.

As mentioned on page 1 of this thread I cut a large hole in place of the slits similar to the RA and EVO.

The standard snorkel is still causing a big restriction so I have fitted a RA snorkel which fit perfectly .
This will definitely help get more air into my K &N filter to allow better breathing.

Pics are here, first post-- http://clubcj.net/viewtopic.php?t=2182

Also for those not aware, the standard snorkel has a grid of holes, like a cheese grater underneath just over the battery where it can suck in hot engine bay air.
