What is a cheap way to get reliable power gains?

Discussion in '8G Lancer - Performance' started by Logsters Lancer, Apr 20, 2009.

  1. Hi guys.

I just bought a 2009 mitsubishi lancer VRX (i think that is the australian equivalent of the GTS), it comes with the 2.4 litre mivec engine and have been told it puts out about 170hp, i want to increase that to 200hp+ without installing a turbo. Unfortunately i dont have to much to spend due to the cost of the car, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

So far the suggestions are a RRM piggyback, Injen CAI, Tsudo cat back exhaust and a light weight pully. If you have any more suggestions please post them.

There is no need for larger injectors and fuel pump. These are a waste of money at this time. You would only lose mpg due to running richer. No need to upgrade them until you go turbo or nitrous. And even nitrous there is no need.

I always think the best to start with.. is the intake.
They exhaust... and from there its really up to the driver!

sure there is. but that cheap power wouldnt be reliable...

    There are 3 categories
    Cheap
    Reliable
    and Powerful.

    Pick at most 2 :)

The cheap power mods (like intake, exhaust, etc) have been shown to have little performance increases as seen in various dyno charts provided by multiple individuals. If you want real power, I think you're gonna have to go for a turbo. But that won't come cheap. so... you're hooped...

The problem is that im 17 so the loan couldnt go in my name, and the condition my parants made was the car cant be turbocharged, but if i just added small things like a piggyback, intake, exhaust, injectors, ect, they wont really care, as long as it doesnt cost me a fortune. So what im really looking for is a combo of small things that add up to a reasonable power gain

Lets just imagine, if cost factor was removed to a certain degree, to make a cost/power balance, what would i need to do?
Keep in mind that the car has to stay N/A.

    Give me a list, eg

Intake - Type of intake, eg pod filter
Exhaust - Type of exhaust, eg axle back, cat back

The Tsudo N1 Exhaust is good and cost a lot less then a Greddy or HKS!
Intake I have always gone with Injen!

Are there any disagreements on the Tsudo N1 exhaust?

^^ look around before jumping on the first opinion thrown at you. There is a lot of options out there!!

    Injectors would be USELESS!!!

    Injectors would be.
Increase your air flow... thats a good way to go.

    RRM Piggyback
    RRM Timing Module
    RRM V2 Light Weight Pulley
    Injen Cold Air Intake
    Injen SES Header-back Exhaust

And other than a header you're basically maxed out for bolt on's...

If you want to go the more affordable route, swap out the header-back exhaust for an axle-back (Tsudo is the cheapest I believe) and get an rrm short ram intake, the light weight pulley is only $150, and instead of the piggy back try your luck with just the timing module for $250. That should give you a pretty good driving experience, don' forget the short shifter though.

    Go for the INJEN CAI
the RRM 4-1 or the EVO Soul 4-2-1 header
    the RRM Lighweight Pully V2
and a nice Exhaust, best is header back.

Or go for a costum dynoed exhaust system with header, cat and muffler.
But that would be so cheap.

  16. So far everything i have read has lead me to believe that the injen CAI is the best way to go.

The exhaust will have to be a cat back because i dont want to void my warrenty. I looked up the Tsudo cat back on youtube and it sounds awesome, but if you have another exhaust in mind please post it and i will look it up.

    looking foward to that review.

  17. I also looked up the Greddy Ti-c cat back, sounded pretty cool and was fairly cheap to.

Both of them are great exhausts.. its just in what sound or look you want.

  19. Good, i guess i will just have to wait a while and see what one is available at the time.

I was told that if i install a cat back i lose my free roadside assist, so i want to drive the car for a while and make sure it wont brake down in the first 10 000 kms, after that the car should be fine.
