sorry if its a silly question but i dont really get this Twin Clutch-SST, how its manual and automatic shift modes. If its a automatic shift wouldn't that make it automatic trany? like the cvt? again sorry for this silly question.
its 2 clutches encased in 1 system. 1 for odd and 1 for even gears. say for instance, you are in 1st gear and when the computer wants to switch gears it tranfsers to the other clutch for 2nd gear. there are not torque converters as in auto trannys, so no slipping hence less power loss to the wheels. CVT sucks, it can't handle a high amount of torque so turbo is out of the question... trust me I gave up on my lancer - all the tuning is a waste of money. an evo will be my next purchase after this one dies.
It automatically engages and disengages the clutch for you via hydraulics. There are no shifter cables or anything run thur the cabin...All controlled electronically. The transmission has its own TCU (ecu for transmission). For example, Put it in Drive. Gas a little, the car doesn't move, but the throttle blips to 2k rpms. Then you slowly feel the clutch engage. It slips out smoothly and your off and drive. Then you can put it in Sport mode and the TCU puts more clamping force on the clutches. Your shifts and engages are more direct and firmer. Like a real stick car. This transmission drives stick better than I can...I have an 11 second evo too... Keep it on automatic and it'll shift for you. You can pull the shift lever or use the paddle shifters to manually up and downshift. The big difference is the speed at which the hi tech transmission operates at. It shifts faster than I can with my twin disc clutch evo. It has two clutches in this car. Not ONE, but TWO!!!
the only downside that I've heard with the SST trannys is that they are not able to withstand as much HP as a regular tranny. They were saying that you can't MOD it as high because it can't handle it. I'll look for the article...
The downside is the clutches have a rating of 350hp. Which nonone know's if its to the wheels or flywheel... We usually say to the flywheel. So that is like 300whp... If we bolt on everything to maximize the stock turbo we are at 270whp and 300lbft of torque. That is 3" full exhaust, bigger front mount, upper and lower intercooler pipes, intake, boost pill and flash. That is perfect for the tranny. Perfect for daily driving. Low 13's easy...Maybe 12's... There's no launch control. So people aren't going to busting these tranny's... In Asia, there are about 3 MR's SST that have upgraded their turbo's to larger 400whp+ ones. Think about it, if the MR already has a bigger turbo than the RA...And the MR guys upgraded their turbo... RA has a baby turbo...we can easily go up to a evo x turbo and run 300-400whp range.
