My Theory About Aftermarket Intakes

Recently I put my car back to stock, I had an RRM intake and what I have noticed in long term use is that I feel my car being much quicker with stock intake then aftermarket. Im not sure if its just me but I feel the car having more torque and I can actually hear/feel Mivec. While using an aftermarket intake I never felt or heard Mivec. I might be crazy but I think I might be right.

My guess is that since running an intake, the engine is collecting more air then it normally would and not allowing Mivec to kick in, in conclusion the car would act differently? For example, oxygen is everywhere around us, a safe level of oxygen would be 20.9% anything lower would be too lean and anything more would be much richer. Breathing in too lean of air or too rich of air can cause health problems. I believe that the more air directing into the engine will cause it to be too rich and leading the engine to problems. I have been monitoring my MPG as well, it seems like I get better MPG and I have been driving the same as I did before.

What do you guys think? I wanna hear your inputs

Or better yet experiment this for a week and see what results you get.

you just blew my mind, if i had an aftermarket intake id try it, but funds dont cooperate.

Hmm im not quite sure that I agree with everything here... The aftermarket intakes do allow for more air, which is good... Which in turn would lead to more HP and torque in some cases. I dont understand what you mean by not letting the MIVEC kick in....The mass airflow sensor makes adjustments according to the amount of air intake and should automatically change some minor tuning to adjust for the more air being inducted. RRM and many other performance companies make these products.... how could you possibly think they are all wrong?? Just my 2 cents... I could be wrong but thats my understanding...

i dun think mivec "kicks" in its actually always on...

mivec is always on, correct.. BUT... it hits hard at 3.8K

    3780 if u wanna b exact

Thanks for the replies, yes it works best around 3.5k mark as BigSteve said.

CleanrideGTS- Yea you might be right, I see that you have the RRM intake. I would suggest yourself to experiment it out and see how it feels. Its a really easy mod to switch back. My opinion is that I think its not the amount of air that your sucking in your engine. Its the temperature that actually goes in engine. I mean what would be so good about an intake that consumes in a large amount of warm/hot air?

Due to our cars being so new, vehicle engineering has always improved over the years. We cannot compare a 94 Honda Civic to a 08 Lancer, such as the 94 Civic was friendly to any mod. In this case slapping on a intake on a Civic might have better gains then to a new car. I believe that when the Engineers start designing they want to get the most out of it without internally damaging anything. I think that new cars are going to be prone to mods and sooner or later mods will eventually damage parts. Im sure they have done long term testing that allows the car to perform the best with the parts that are on the car. If mods made every car better then why would they have to create new engine block?

Im not here to bash on anything I just want to get something solved. Im definitely not biased and I would hope everyones comments were un-biased as well.

seriously though... intake on a N/A engine, i dont think it would make any difference at all... the gain could be so small that it would go unnoticed... gain or lose you probably wont feel anything, only thing is you're gon hear the intake and it'll prolly make u think ur going faster but in reality you arent going any faster... thats my take on the intake

intake makes your air to fuel ratio lower the more air giveing you a leaner air to fuel ratio than stock. the leaner the car runs the more gas you will save and the more hp the car has

Hmmm so less fuel? and more Hp? Sounds like a bargain. Ive been tracking my MPG and it seems like I get better MPG then I did when I had my intake.

You also have to remember, you had V1 on your car from RRM. Ill tell ya, i feel the difference from stock to RRM SRI V2. And i have noticed a lil bit of an increase in mpg, yet i cannot track it correctly due to the HORRENDOUS traffic in miami dade county.

I have the RRM V2 as well. I noticed a difference immediately when i installed it. My mpg also went up about 1.5 - 2 mpg. Not a huge increase, but its there

What is the difference between the V1 & V2? Considering this mod to my 09 and RRM only shows one available for the 09, but two different units for the 08. I thought the only difference in the 08 units was polished aluminum.

Yo Kink, I had that problem too and heres what I said on 9glancers.com awhile ago.
I just had installed RRM Short Ram Intake for 2.4L 09 Lancer. I thought it was going to help out the engine and somewhat improve gas mileage. Well....I noticed one BIG thing. Driving the car, arrive at stop sign, take off wih low end power improvement from intake?? Not at all!!! I noticed that when it hits 2 rpm, its sorta hesitates and pauses then kicks in. Flooring off again, hits 1 rpm then hesitates, stops accelerating for a second or 2, then continues normally then gets really LOUD. It sounds bad for the engine lol. Is this normal!?! I'm about to put back the stock air filter and purchase WORKS drop in. I like the drop in cuz it has DIRECT air flow from the snorkel. Now, I did leave the snorkel in there with the RRM intake and still continues to have problems. Anybody have this problem with RRM???
I decided to take off the intake and put back the stock drop filter in and a huge difference when I first got the car with the same drop in filter. Did the intake sorta changed the settings and stuck with it and sorta modified it with the stock drop filter. I totally feel the kick in acceleration and better MPG.
2 weeks later, I got K&N drop in filter and it continues to blow me away. Start to go, tremendous improvement in acceleration but not that much to exagerate. I think installing that RRM intake which SUCKED!! but helped the car out big time. It just keeps getting better and better. You are not alone KINK.

Yea definitely im glad im not the only one worrying about this issue. Goodjob with your experimenting I might actually try out a K&N to see how that works out.

CleanrideGts no one in this thread is dissing RRM. Simply if I was going to mod my car, I definitely want whats best for my car. I would hate to see an investment go down the drain later on.

I understand that part of the argument because i would never want to hurt my car. I wasnt pointing you out either so i didnt say that YOU were dissing them. Anyways, no point in arguing about it. So if there are any facts that can be proven from some of these tests please post them....Thanks
