Will intake mess up the engine over years?

I went to Cali for a week to hang out with friends and family. I drove with my cuzin in his rsx and got talkin about modding my lancer. I asked about the intake mod and he said that intakes will eventually mess up your enigne. I asking him how surpisingly and he said that intakes suck in bad shit and fuck up your engine.

I want to ask you guys, is that true?

...? i guess you could say it sucks up "bad shit" but thats why theres a filter. just clean it or replace it every so often.

If anything, non-restrictive, cold air would help the engine in the long run.

    Water is your only concern.

there is an on going debate about the water issue. So who knows. I personally have not experience that from a cai and others that I know have not either.

    CAI...?

Apparently I am a bit lost.

    SRI-Short Ram Intake
    CAI-Cold Air Intake

O.K., understand the acronyms now, but give me a reader's digest version on the difference (advantage/disadvantage) of both please.

HAHA...I blew an engine in the neon i had years ago with an SRI...A truck drove through water, and it splashed down over my hood and the bitch sucked it right up and blew a hole into the bottom the engine! So either way, having a cone filter could do damage in the right conditions!

It is hit or miss with either the sri or cai. I personally had a both on my eclipse. For the sri it sounded better but I felt no performance differences in either, no numbers, but just the feeling. There is a big debate on the cai for having hydrolock (water getting into the engine by way of the cai) AEM has a bypass valve to take care of this problem. CAI uses cooler ambient air going into the the engine, whereas the SRI uses the air that recircs in the engine bay which is usually hotter air. The RRM intake for the 08 is a shorty but if you leave the intake tube attached, in theory, it kinda works like a CAI

    ^Makes sense.

i think you'd expect better throttle response from an SRI in general as the air gets into the engine faster once you hit the accelerator while the CAI it takes a little time to travel when you ask for that initial burst of air.

It will slowly kill your engine if you have a crap filter too, but having a bad filter on your stock air box will result in the same situation so its no different. I'd have K&N at the top of my best filters list. As long as you clean it as directed then you wont have any problems.

When you look at it modding your car will shorten its life. The more hp you force out of the engine the more wear it takes. But for most people they dont even keep the car long enough for it to become a problem. Though owning any sports car will land you with the same problem, a highly tuned engine wears faster and theres nothing you can do about it. Why do you think the warranty on the evo is shorter than on the standard lancers.
