Hey check out this mod. It seemed like there was more room under the hood for an air filter than what RRM suppled with their SRI, so I installed a K&N model RC-5106 filter. I don't know if there is really much of a performance gain, but it is a least something different. I also made a heat shield out of the bottom of a 13 gallon trash can and painted it with high temp engine paint. It is ghetto but it seems to be working.

I think it actually looks really good! Who cares whats it's made out of, I thought it was a kit from K&N when I first looked...how do u have it mounted??
It is mouted to the strut tower brace with black zip ties. I also zip tied the factory intake tube that brings in fresh air to the brace for the RRM intake. I didn't like the idea of it flopping around under there.
Doesnt matter how big of a filter you have.. your engine is gonna suck up as much air as it needs anyways.. return the air filter and get your money back. Stick with the one RRM gave you. BigSteve
i think that filter is better than RRM one but i do agree with you it doesnt matter how big the filter is
it may not matter how big it is but the quality of the filter does. In tests i have seen done in aus the K&N from memory came out on top for filtration and still managed to come second in flow only shown up by a filter which came last on filtration ( it had huge holes so air along with everything else got through fast ) Other tests have had similar results. Personally i wouldnt use anything but a K&N. The million mile warranty is nice too. RRM one looks like a no-brand with the lack of logo's that the usual brands plaster their stuff with. Oh.. and good job on the surround.. i thaught K&N finally brought out a SRI for the new lancer. Fiberglass and alluminium are your other options but what you have done looks very professional.. i'd be very happy with that. The K&N sticker finishes off the illusion nicely.
Set up looks pretty good and like others said, I would stick with the K&N just because of their qualtity.
Redline, Get a K and N Filter and slap it on the hose under your hood and zip tie it to your strust bar and you basically have a RRM SRI... the only diff between doing that and the RRM SRI is the mount piece that holds the filter.. but realistically... its the same thing. It just looks ghetto.
You would want the best filtration with lots of flow. a small filter may not flow enough for how much the engine wants, creating a vacuum. As an example (mustangs), people change out their stock supercharger intake tubing with a bigger pipe and large filter and gain 1-2psi of boost, so there is a difference. Of course, it depends on the application but just putting in my .02
