CVT or Standard transmission

Ok so I want to get a 5spd, but my wife wants a CVT so she can drive... am I going to completely regret that I bought a CVT if I go with that?

 

what makes you think you'd regret it? Do you WANT her to be able to drive your car? if she doesn't know how to drive stick then you can risk having her "learn" on your car. (your poor transmission lol)

it's up to you. it's not like it's a "bad" thing to have CVT.

 

Yea I mean it's fine that she wants to drive the car. I just wanted to know if the CVT was that much slower and I don't want to get bored with the car since it would be an automatic.

 

test drove both and didn't think the manual was enough of a difference to warrant driving it. Afterall, its not a fast car to begin with, so does it really matter that the CVT makes a slow car just slightly slower? I personally go back and forth with missing a manual and enjoying the CVT. But unfortunately, the CVT will feel rather slushy until it has around 1K miles on it, so driving them at the dealer will be a tough call. If it was a regular auto I would say 5sp all the way, but the CVT is not anything like a standard auto. Just go with what you feel comfortable with. If your intention is to do performance mods eventually then you may want a 5sp as it will sound and feel better with mods, since a CVT really masks the power the engine makes because its so smooth. just my .02 though

 

well ask yourself....

"will i get bored eventually driving an automatic car"

i know for me, the answer is hell yea i'd get bored with auto. so its 5 speed all the way for me.

Is this a decision by BOTH of you or is this gonna be 'your' car?

I was in the same boat... my wife and I both commute far to work, and we need to be able to drive eachothers car if the situation warrents it. I myself have drove standard and automatics over the years and Im profficient with either... but my wife is hopeless in a 5 speed, lol.

I tried to teach her on two of my old 5 speed cars.. one a truck the other a passenger car, and she just cant do it for some reason, lol.

When I went to the Mitsu dealer, I test drove both the 5 speed and the CVT. The 5 speed definitly has more "get-up and go" from a stop and was generally more fun to test drive. The CVT was a bit sluggish from a start but picks up speed very nicly once past 20 mph or so. The CVT felt very strange to me, being how it was the first time ever driving a car with a CVT transmission. Even in an automatic you expect the gear change to come and can feel it.. but the CVT just climbs gradually in rpms as you speed up... very strange feeling for the first time.

If it was only me, I would have opted for a 5 speed... I needed a car quick and there were no 5 speeds around when I needed it, but if it was just for me I would have waited I think. So, I ended up buying a CVT and after a little over a month I can say Im happy with it.

The only time I kinda wish I got a manual is when I read about mods that are only for, or come out first for, manuals.

The CVT is fun to drive.. if you dont want to be bothered with shifting, just put it in drive.. when you want to shift, put it in sport mode... or, if your driving and feel the need to bang thru a few gears real fast, just leave the lever in drive and tap the paddle shifters on the whell to switch between sport and drive on the fly without having to touch the shift knob.

When on the highway I must say that the CVT is more fun then any manual I have driven... it keeps a nice constant speed/rpm when just traveling and when you need to pass or just want to take off, you just floor it (seriuosly, floor it.. the manual even says to floor it, lol) and this CVT takes off like a bat out of hell.

Now, all that said, as a person who drives 5 speeds as much as automatics, there is no real substitue for the feel of a 5 speed.. its more involved with clutch and you can feel in-tuned with your car more. But if two people must be able to drive it then you might be better off getting the CVT.. look at my wife, she just cant seem to understand 5 speeds, and if I bought a 5 speed, I would prob be trading it in for a lose right now.

If I had the money, I would buy a CVT for my daily comutter and then buy a evo for my fun car, lol... but since I dont have the money, the CVT is a good choice.
