Ok, I have an idea, but first let me say that I KNOW it is neither reasonable nor gonna be cheap. Also i know that most of you will think "why not just buy the Evo" I said the same thing. My point is to do something different and secondly keep the insurance payments for and ES lol. Now to the actual Question. Is it possible to take the drivetrain from an evo and transfer it onto the ES. In other words make my front wheel a AWD? Now i would appreciate honest answers and not just smart ass comments, but i expect to recieve the later. If anyone seriously knows if it can be done please let me know.

maybe if you turbocharge it. it takes hp to run the rear wheels as well as the front. even then, i doubt it would be worth it. an es is not meant to be awd, so i wouldnt waste my time. just my .02

yeah if i was going to do this it would definately be getting a major hp increase. The thing is i know it would be easier and cheaper to go out and buy a different car, but this is more of a do something that hasn't been done kinda idea. Make something from the bottom up custom. of course money and time being the big issue this would be a down the road project/challenge for myself and my wife to take on. So i really would like to know what it would take so i could start planning.

You would need the rear end of a AWD mitsubishi. Possibly evo or an outlander. If you go to evolutionm.net there is a guy called turbotime. He is doing a very similar project. He is doing his work on the OZ rally and making it a rear wheel drive car with the 4g63 engine i believe. But I was also told the 4g63 sits opposite compared to the 02-06 lancers. Money wise...if you do it yourself and know what you are doin should be 7 grand with all the parts. If you go to a mechanic and have him do it add another 7 grand. And this is not including any mods. Just the engine, tranny, AWD rear end, and some other stuff. But here is his link. Its a very good work in progress...

If you are looking for an honest answer, it is possible. Is it cost effective, not in any way, shape or form. It will cost you more to make your car AWD and replace the engine than you are thinking.

Think about it this way... Everything from the engine to the brakes will need replaced, or at least reinforced/strengthened. The Evo AWD system does not only contains front/rear diffs, stronger tranny, and different sensors which lancers do not have, they also contain a separate control unit that controls the AWD. So that is going to be a ton of electric work on top of the parts, mechanical labor, etc. etc.

If you are doing this because you are feeling the urge for more power, you should really look into buying a rolling Evo 8 chassis, ~8k if you look hard enough, and building it from the ground up. This will give you the opportunity to have a powerful car, build it yourself, and not kill the bank the way you would swapping an Evo drivetrain + engine into a Lancer. And the downtime would also be non existent.

Trust me, this is a LOT more then your are thinking. Plus, you could spend 10k on a project like this for parts only, and the day you get it running you lose control into a tree. W/out insurance, you just flushed it into the toilet.

Do it right the first time and you will save MAJOR $$$ in the end.

BTW... turbotime's RWD Lancer project has NOTHING to do with the OP's orig. post. It would be cheaper and more reliable, again, to buy an Evo chassis and going to, for e.g., Burshur and buying a built short block and building it.

I would start looking at the new Ralliart to see what can be swapped.

definitely look into the ralliart because they're not wider like the evo and I think they use the evo 9 differential correct me if im wrong
